This year’s House of Representatives letter in support of level funding for the Department of Defense (DOD) peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) began circulating yesterday. It is very important for our grassroots supporters to take immediate action to urge their Representative to sign the letter!

It is a very difficult time for the DOD BCRP on Capitol Hill.  You and all members of your networks need to be activated to contact your Representatives and urge them to show their support for ending breast cancer by signing the letter.  The deadline for signing is March 14th!

Background:  In order to maintain funding for the DOD BCRP, money must be appropriated by Congress.  The first step in this process is for the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee to appropriate funding.  Representatives King (R-NY), McGovern (D-MA), Costello (R-PA) and Hastings (D-FL) are circulating a Dear Colleague Letter asking House Members to sign a letter to the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee leadership, supporting level funding for the DOD BCRP.

The action you are taking will let your Representatives know how important the DOD BCRP is to breast cancer research. If you happen to make contact with a Representative  who has questions you can’t answer, let me know and we’ll follow-up.

I have made up a list of all the Texas Representatives and their districts including their office phone numbers and if they signed the “Dear Colleague” letter in 2015.  Use this list if you need to locate your Representative.  This list is attached to this email for your reference.

Call the office and leave the following message for your Representative:

I urge you to show your support for ending breast cancer by signing the letter to Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Frelinghuysen and Ranking Member Visclosky calling for level funding—$120 million—for the DOD peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program for FY 2017.

If your representative signed the 2015 DOD Dear Colleague Letter leave this message:

Thank you for signing the 2015 DOD Dear Colleague Letter to the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee calling for level funding-$120million- for the DOD peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program. I  urge you to continue to show your support for ending breast cancer by signing the letter to Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Frelinghuysen and Ranking Member Visclosky calling for level funding—$120 million—for the DOD peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program for FY 2017.

If you are able to make contact with a  Representative who agrees to sign the letter, her/his staff should email one of the following staffers of the letter sponsors to make it happen:

LaRissa Ferrell in Representative Hastings’ office if the Representative you have called is a Democrat
Katherine Loughead in Representative Costello’s office if the Representative you have called is a Republican

Email me  edale28@aol.com and let me know that your Representative has agreed to sign the letter or if you have any questions.
